The Gospel Christmas Story

The Christmas Gospel story has been on our hearts and minds in the 7^th grade Christian Faith and Life classes as we studied three different perspectives of the Christmas story. We learned that much of our understanding and ideas of the Christmas story come from Christmas carols. However, our true source of the Christmas story comes from the Gospels in the New Testament -namely Matthew, Luke and John. The author’s purpose and intended audiences opened our eyes to new details in each Gospel. Matthew wrote to the Jews and focused on the genealogy of Jesus making a point to connect Jesus to David and Abraham of the Old Testament and showed the fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham. Luke’s audience was the Gentiles – people who most likely would have questions about Jesus. He made it known that Jesus came for all people – even the lowly, unpopular, outcast, and neglected. Lastly, John wrote to everyone because the whole world needs to hear about Jesus! Special attention was given to those who did not know Jesus yet.

After studying the different Gospel perspectives, the students looked at Luke 2:1-20. They each illustrated a selection of verses to “tell the story” and created a narrated, digital presentation with a group of classmates.
