St. John’s students and NJHS hit a home run for Reading to Angels.

Each year the St. John’s chapter of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) organizes a service project which involves the entire school.  These service projects are organized and carried out by the members of NJHS.  (NJHS recognizes outstanding achievement in five areas:  scholarship, citizenship, service, leadership, and character.).  This year’s group decided to help the Reading to Angels charity by placing boxes around campus for grade levels to donate gently used or new books.  Grade levels competed for a free dress day by collecting the most books. Boxes were decorated by color to make them recognizable to their respective grade level classrooms.

On Monday, the first day, it appeared to be a bust!  Only about 100 books were brought in.  Tuesday things began to look better and by Wednesday it was clear that the number of books being brought in would exceed everyone’s expectations.  In the end, a total of almost 5,300 books were donated!  The winning grade, 5^th grade, brought in a whopping 880 books!  The pictures below give an idea of just how it went as NJHS members brought books to room 207 daily and counted them.  At the end of the week, we had a “book moving party” to pack the books into boxes and move them to the garage where they will be picked up.  Great Job NJHS!
