Math Mr. Martin Cannot Teach

This year, the middle school students have an opportunity to take an elective called “Math Mr. Martin Cannot Teach.” This elective explores ideas and areas of mathematics that are not included in the standard math curriculum. This year students have explored complex ideas in approachable formats such as graph theory, number theory, fractals, Pascal’s triangle, counting in different bases, and the amazing world of prime numbers. This often includes a mixture of hands-on activities, group collaboration, and videos that engage the students and allow them to play around with different areas of math that they never knew existed. Math is more than simply solving for x, rather it is a way to think critically and approach complex questions. By the end of the year, students will engage in this thinking and expand their view of what math really is as a field of study.
