Habitats, Adaptation, Evolution, and 3D Printing?

Eighth grade science has been learning about DNA and heredity, specifically traits being passed through generations. Students have also studied how animals can adapt to their environment and habitats for survival, and then how species’ traits can evolve over many generations. Our classes have specifically looked at bird beak characteristics and how they support the consumption of food. Eighth graders chose a modern day bird to research, predict how that bird’s habitat could change over the course of 1000 years, and then design an evolutionary beak for that bird based on its new habitat. 

After students designed their evolutionary bird beak, they then used the Tinkercad platform to design their beak in 3D form. These designs were created with a moveable connection so that once printed, then can open and close. Visit our eighth grade classrooms at Expression Explosion to see some of these on display!
