7th and 8th grade Spanish Classes

La Tradición de las Doce Uvas de la Suerte de Noche Vieja y El Dia de los Reyes Magos 

Hi In Spain, Mexico and some of South America they celebrate the tradition of eating the 12 good luck grapes at midnight on New Years. When the clock strikes midnight each person eats one grape with each bell chime. They eat a total of 12 grapes total and they believe this will bring good luck for the 12 months of the year. 

In class we watched the New Years bell chimes in La Plaza del Sol in Madrid, Spain and we ate 12 marshmallows as we made out 12 wished for the year. 

For el Dia de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day) on January 6th we learned about how el Dia de los Reyes Magos is celebrated in Spain, Mexico and other Spanish speaking countries. On the night of January 5th, children put out their shoes and the 3 Wise Men bring them gifts. 

We also learned about the tradition of La Rosca de Reyes (Three Kinds Cake). We learned that in Mexico they hide miniature plastic babies in La Rosca de Reyes. The people that find a baby in their piece of cake have to host a dinner on February 2nd for el Dia de la Calendaria. 

All the 7th and 8th grade classes ate Rosca de Reyes. The classes that had kids that found a baby Jesus in their piece of cake get a Fiesta on the week of February 2nd. All of the classes will be having a fiesta! We had a lot of fun learning about these traditions.
