We’re Warning You Now.

One thing you can say about Middle School students, pretty much without contradiction, is that they are master manipulators.  They are skilled at working the system (and adults!) in order to get what they think they need.  Somewhat surprisingly, we’re about to aid them in this endeavor, as Language Arts in the Seventh Grade explores the persuasive essay unit.

The process of writing an essay, begun over a month ago, has led Seventh Graders to the point in which they can begin choosing a topic upon which to write.  This year, students will be given a wide variety of topic choices.  It is hoped that,  among the 26 unique topics available, every individual should find a topic of personal interest.  Once students have locked down their topic choice, future class periods will discuss what is necessary in each essay paragraph – line by line.  Transitions, evidence, internal citations, Works Cited pages, direct quotations, logical development of the thesis,  and all the rest of formal persuasive writing challenges will be covered, as well.

As both parents and educators know, proper writing technique and skill are an essential element for success in high school and college.  Taking such a pragmatic, step-by-step approach over many weeks of school has proven helpful for St. John Lutheran School students in the past.  It’s now time for the Seventh Graders to learn these necessary skills.

Just be warned.  We’re giving students even more skills at persuasion. Things might become a little more . . . “calculated” at home in the weeks to come.
