The Human Machine

Over the last several weeks, 4th graders have been learning about how the human body works, and exploring how everything connects together to allow us to do the amazing things we do every day without thinking.  They began by looking at the miracle of movement - and even created their own working hand model using their knowledge of tendons, bones, and muscles.  They then explored the inner workings of eyes, and learned through watching the dissection of a cow eye, how different parts of the eye work together and take in just the right amount of light to create vision.  (If you are in need of some glasses or contacts, they can tell you exactly why!)  After applying that learning to the study of nocturnal animals and their abilities, the students ended by connecting all of this to the brain.  They experimented with brain messaging and reflexes in order to show how eyes, muscles, nerves, and more produce our body’s movements and instincts.

In all of this, the students were able to see just how intricate and connected God made our bodies to be.  They were excited to connect each lesson to see why they are able to do what they do (even with the dissections!), and now have a better understanding of why each person truly is a God-created miracle.
