Designing Spaces: Bringing Math to Life

This month, our 6th grade students have been putting their math skills to the test with an exciting hands-on project—designing their own apartments! Using their knowledge of area and surface area, they are creating floor plans that include bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, and even unique design elements like circular tables or hot tubs. They must calculate square footage, determine perimeters, and ensure their layouts are both functional and within the given space constraints.

This project not only reinforces key mathematical concepts but also encourages problem-solving, creativity, and real-world application. As they work through design challenges, students are thinking critically about how space is used, just like real architects and engineers. It’s been amazing to see their enthusiasm as they bring math to life in such a meaningful way!
