Cake, Please?! Application, Design, and 3D printing in Math Class

Anytime cake is involved, math becomes more fun and relevant! To apply their understanding of volume, the honors math 7 students were asked to design a multi-layer cake which would serve 200 people. They received minimum criteria: the volume of one serving, the cake must be multi-layered, and all tiers must have the same height. The students went to work finding measurements and creating designs on paper. Collaboration, perseverance, and reasoning were evident as the cakes evolved! Once complete, the students created their 3D models in Tinkercad. Their final task was to find a scale factor and use it to create a scale model which would reduce their full-sized cake to fit in a 5 in cubic box. This model was also created in Tinkercad and ultimately printed with our 3D printers. Collaboration, perseverance, and reasoning were evident as groups created their designs! The application of math concepts and the printed cakes were amazing!
