5th Grade Overnight Field Trip to Riley’s Farm!

Our 5th graders recently enjoyed an overnight field trip to Riley’s Farm! We traveled back in time to 1776 and experienced firsthand what it would have been like to live during the Revolutionary War period. We set up camp and were divided into battle groups. We marched and learned how to listen to military commands. We learned the multi-step process of shooting our “muskets” and then spent the rest of the evening dining in a candle-lit tavern, listening to colonial music, and getting to meet and hear Patrick Henry’s famous speech!  Students spent a warm evening, cozy in their tents… haha… temps were in the 30’s and we were anything but warm! However, we all had great attitudes and we made the connection to our learning regarding just how cold it must have been during that famous winter at Valley Forge! Students were served a delicious breakfast before attending various colonial learning stations. We wrote with quill ink pens, made tapestry with our looms, prepared bread for baking, saw firsthand how obnoxious it would have been to have our homes inhabited by British soldiers during the Quartering Act, and received lessons in colonial etiquette. We played popular children’s games and experienced a typical colonial court proceeding where the judge, jury, witness, and prosecutor were all the same person. So unfair! It was certainly a trip we will never forget!
