1st Grade and the Environmental Nature Center

Our first graders attended their first field trip of the year! Students travelled by bus to the Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach where they learned about animal adaptations and biomimicry. Naturalists guided groups of children through discovery stations. 

At this station, students learned about body adaptations and how they help animals survive in their environment. We have a mammal with fur and sharp claws for surviving in the forest, a fish with  

scales and gills to live in the ocean, and a snake with scales to protect its body in the hot dry desert. 

First graders learned about Biomimicry - People using ideas from nature to solve problems. Plants  

and animals have different ways to solve problems that have inspired inventions such as a snakes fangs inspired syringes, spider webs inspired fishing nets, and birds inspired aeronautics. 

Visiting the Environmental Nature Center was a wonderful learning experience. My personal favorite was petting Fiesta, the Rosy Boa Constrictor snake. I think I might need a new pet!
