Sports Philosophy

The philosophy of the St. John’s Lutheran School after-school sports program is an extension of the overall philosophy of the school. Through athletics we hope to prepare students for full participation in their adult lives. We, as coaches and school officials, seek to develop the values which determine the athlete’s relationship with self, others and ultimately with God.

Participation in the St. John's organized sports program is voluntary. It is a privilege, and a participant has the responsibilities of courtesy and sportsmanship on the playing field and at school. St. John’s sees the organized sports experience as a platform for developing athletic, social and spiritual skills.

St. John’s Lutheran School recognizes the value of participation in athletic activities, not only for physical fitness, but in sportsmanship, team building and leadership development, as well. It is the intent of St. John’s to provide this opportunity to students who meet and maintain eligibility based on academic, behavioral, and physical qualifications.

Students in grades five (5) through eight (8) have numerous opportunities to participate in after-school athletics.

Taking Care of the Bodies God has Blessed Us With

Physical fitness is an important component to the school day at St. John's in kindergarten through 8th grade. The inclusion of regular physical activity helps students maintain fitness, develop muscular strength, and improve cardiovascular health. St. John's facilities include both indoor and outdoor areas for teaching, including Senne Field, Walker Hall Gymnasium, and outdoor courts on our playground.

Our PE teacher, Mrs. Miller, has created a program for students K-5 that encourages them to reach their personal best, tests knowledge of game rules and basic physiology, and overall lets them have FUN while being active! Middle school students have their own program - led by Mr. Harrison and Mrs. VB - learning through the introduction of various sports and physical activities. Students also participate in local sporting competitions which include track and field competitions at Crean Lutheran High School, and Kids Run the OC (KROC) Marathon at the Orange County Fairgrounds in order to support the importance of teamwork and good health.

Build Self-Confidence

The participation in physical education provides a positive influence on a student's personality, character and self-esteem. In addition, the team-building process enhances communication skills, and the skills required to get along and cooperate with students of varying ethnic backgrounds and personalities.

Develop Motor Skills

Physical education is essential to the development of motor skills and the enhancement of reflexes. Hand-eye coordination is improved, as well as good body movements, which helps in the development of a healthy body posture.

Health & Nutrition

Physical education teaches students the importance of physical health. Physical health and education informs students on sound eating practices and the essential guidelines for nutrition.

Relieves Stress

Let's be honest, students have substantial amounts of stress due to curriculum, homework, families and peer pressures. Involvement in sports, recreational activities or other forms of physical fitness offer a flexible method of stress relief.

Supporting our Student Athletes

The St. John’s Athletic Booster Club (ABC) was created in 2014 and is organized and operated for the charitable purpose of promoting and supporting St. John’s Lutheran School athletics and participating athletes.

ABC events include representation at the Annual Ice Cream Social, representation at St. John's tournaments, and an end of year Athletic Banquet. Other events and fundraisers are being discussed, so watch your email for an announcement!

We are always looking for people to serve in support of St. John's Athletic Booster Club. If you are interested, please contact ABC President Amy Maas
